Blog Updates - Blocking Spam Comments

Recently we’ve begun to see a deluge of spam comments across our poor little blog - most centering around pictures of things that nobody really wants to see anyway. As much fun as it is filtering through hundreds of spam message trying to find the ones that matter, we thought it was time to do something.

I’ve never been a big fan of captcha’s. I think they make entering a comment take too much time and I’ve seen captcha’s that I couldn’t even decipher. That being said, we’ve decided to go with a more transparent plugin for Wordpress called WP Hashcash.

This plugin uses Javascript to verify the comment came from an actual browser instead of a spam bot. Because of this, you’ll now have to have Javascript enabled to post comments. So far it’s been very successful in filtering spam and allowing actual comments to go through. If you’re considering a spam blocker for your blog, I would highly recommend this one.
