Imagine Our Surprise

Do you remember that old magazine game, ’spot the differences’? Usually you’d be given two images next to each other and you have to circle all the things in one image that were different from the other. Let’s play a couple of rounds of ’spot the differences’ shall we? This time, instead of images, I’m going to show you a couple of blog posts.

Round 1: Blog Post 1 and Blog Post 2.

Were you able to spot all of the differences? If you’re sharp, you might have noticed that the first example was one of our tutorials. If you’re even sharper, you noticed that the second one was not one of our tutorials. Other than that, the differences are few and far between. I can tell you this though - the first example originated right here. The second one, well that’s just a cheap knockoff. Let’s step it up a notch, the next round is a little more difficult.

Round 2: Blog Post 1 and Blog Post 2.

Hopefully you were able to spot the differences here. In this post, the person didn’t simply copy and paste our images, they were actually modified slightly. In the original, we used songs for examples - the artist, title, and album art. In the other version, the author and album art were changed, but the song titles were kept the same. I’m not going to knock the new images though, the work shows a mastery of Photoshop I’ve rarely seen in my life.

The Wal-Mart Version

The About page on the other blog says some of the work is not their own. If our work was posted unadulterated, I could almost let this slide. Unfortunately, the person went out of their way to slightly modify our example for their post - so that disclaimer doesn’t hold much merit for me. The page also says we can notify them if they forgot to post credit (with a winking emoticon, which I don’t know how to interpret), and they will promptly fix it. As a blogger, you should never have to request credit on your own work. The blog has only been around since June, so hopefully they’ll put forth a better effort in the future. They will have to if they want a chance at becoming a credible developer blog.

All of that aside, we could care less if our tutorials are reposted, heck you can post them verbatim if you want. But please, throw us a little credit - a link or something to the source article. If you’re posting articles in their entirety on your site, I’m not telling you to stop, just make sure to give credit where credit is due. Reposting articles is a great way for us, and many other people, to expand their audience and reach people we would not have otherwise been able to reach.
